Potassium is a fundamental element for the life of plants, in particular it is important for the lignification of tissues, the production of flowers, the color of the blooms, and also for the color and flavor of the fruits; fertilizers for fruit and flowering plants are generally particularly rich in potassium. But in fertilizers there is practically never any potassium in the form of ion, but there are salts that contain mainly potassium. One of these salts, present in chemical fertilizers, is often potassium sulphate; in addition to potassium, which provides all the aforementioned benefits for plants, this fertilizer also contains sulfur, which allows to acidify very alkaline soils; therefore, in particular, the potassium sulfate for acidophilic flowering plants, such as hydrangeas, azaleas, camellias. Hence, potassium sulphate can be one of the ingredients to be mixed to obtain a chemical fertilizer; but it is not advisable to use a fertilizer for plants consisting solely and exclusively of potassium, because plants also need other substances, in particular Phosphorus and Nitrogen, but also other elements in small quantities, such as iron, manganese, Boron. For this reason, in a good quality chemical fertilizer you will find among the various elements contained also potassium, in the form of potassium sulphate, or potassium oxide, or potassium chloride. There are also organic fertilizers very rich in potassium, the most famous, and also used in hobby gardening, is wood ash, which contains potassium in various forms, potassium sulphate, potassium chloride, potassium carbonate; on an industrial level, a potassium-based fertilizer can be found consisting almost mainly of ash produced by burning the waste from the processing of sugar beets. Even when it comes to an organic fertilizer, such as ash, it is not appropriate to use it as the only fertilizer for plants, as although it is very rich in potassium, the ash does not contain nitrogen or phosphorus, and therefore is very unbalanced. To give you an example, we humans eat carbohydrates, fats and proteins; proteins are fundamental in our diet, and very useful, but if we ate only proteins, without ever eating carbohydrates or fats, we would present a series of nutritional deficiencies, due to the fact that our diet is very little varied. Mineral salts for plants are not food, but they are still essential, as vitamins are for us, or salts such as iron and calcium; when supplying a plant with fertilizer, it is first of all important to check the necessary dose (because the excesses "burn" the roots), and then prepare a mixture containing all the minerals necessary for plant life.
