F.C.I classification: Group 2 - pinscher, schnauzer, molossoid and Swiss cattle dogs.

The Cane di Castro Laboreiro (Cao de Castro Laboreiro) undoubtedly has ancient origins. There are no certain documents of its history because there have been no detailed studies on its evolution. Its progenitors were probably Celtic dogs, from which the French, Spanish and Portuguese mountain breeds are derived. It originates from the village of Castro Laboreiro, from which it takes its name. Together with the "Dog of the Serra de Estrela" it is one of the oldest breeds of the Iberian Peninsula. Its diffusion is limited to the mountains of Penda and Suajo and to the rivers Mino and Lima. It is also found in the Province of Duro. Specimens are found up to altitudes of about 1400 m. Its diffusion area is concentrated in the northern regions of Portugal. The breed used in the management and custody of the herds.

General aspect

The morphology of this breed is an aspect that many enthusiasts consider interesting because it is defined by its own Molossoide-Lupoide standard. Tending to straight. Vigorous dog, pleasant morphological structure. Shining coat. Noble habit, severe and harsh expression, mountainous rusticity. It barks in a characteristic, very loud way, starting with variable and generally severe tones and ending with prolonged high tones, similar to screams.

Character

Attitude to frank hostility, without being combative. This breed is not as aggressive as the "Serra di Estrela dog". He is very determined and daring in facing predators and his natural enemies. It adapts very well to living together with the family. He is an affectionate companion. He can always be in contact with children. Excellent companion. Excellent working dog.
