Artisan wood splitter: types
On the market there are several models of this instrument, but the price is not always accessible to everyone. There are horizontal, vertical and screw models; the horizontals are mainly used by professionals in the sector, the screw ones are those equipment used by owners of tractors or excavators since they can be used hooked to vehicles of this type; then there are the verticals used by individuals and gardeners. Excluding the screw ones, for the reason that not everyone has a tractor, we will deal with the horizontal and vertical models. The horizontal are recommended for the simple fact that they can be equipped with wheels so moving is more comfortable; instead the verticals are static equipment. We find different types of power supply: electric, with petrol or diesel engine and those powered by power take-offs of operating machines.
Needed to build a wood splitter
To build a log splitter in a transportable artisan way we will need components that can be purchased in specialized shops. You will then have to go to the DIY center closest to home. An axle with wheels and tires, which you can find in a car demolition at not exaggerated prices and of the measure that best suits your needs, will serve as a basis. A metal tank to contain the hydraulic oil must be built with a shape to adapt to the axle. A beam from two meters upwards with a thickness of at least eighteen mm must be equipped with eyelets welded at the top to fix a hydraulic piston. The hydraulic pump and the distributor must be purchased in pairs because they are specific and logically we will have to provide an electric motor Buy some steel cutouts of at least four mm.
The advice is to get help from a mechanic or a locksmith, but if you are practical enough with a welding machine and various tools you can do it yourself. First of all it is necessary to adapt the hydraulic oil tank to the axle, preferably if it was purchased for this purpose with specific shapes for this purpose; important thing is that when building it, the upper wall must be reinforced as much as possible because the beam will be welded and it will have to withstand strong stresses. It will be welded to the center of the axle and providing it with plates with special holes for fixing the hydraulic piston. Place the engine on the upper surface of the tank and secure it with spring bolts and find the most suitable place for the distributor.
Handcrafted log splitter: Assembly and operator safety
You just have to weld the ax to the beam at the end of the piston (see previous photo) and provide the head of the rod with a steel plate strong enough to withstand the stresses. The distributor must be positioned at a shorter distance from your arm since the operating lever is placed above it; you just have to connect the tank with the pump by means of a hose; the latter will be connected to the distributor from where the pipes for the piston and the return pipe for the tank will start. The craft tool is completed now you just have to test it to see if it works as it should; Always wear protective clothing and be very careful because piston pressure can cause accidents. Good job!
