Origin, classification and history
F.C.I classification: Group 8 - retrieving dogs hunting dogs water dogs.
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient breed carried over into the water. It has been present since 1800 in the marshy areas of Ravenna and in the Comacchio plains. With the reclamation of almost all the marshy areas of Italy, which took place over the centuries, the Lagotto Romagnolo had to find another job to help man and therefore he gradually specialized in the search for truffles in the open countryside and on the hilly areas of Romagna. It has become the only race recognized worldwide with this attitude. His sense of smell is simply infallible and now for him, finding a truffle has become a very easy operation.
Medium-small size dog, with good proportions and strong appearance, robust and rustic at the same time. The aesthetic peculiarity that characterizes it is the curly and woolly hair on the whole body, including the head. The qualities of rusticity establish its functionality at work.
Canine with an expression that is always alert and attentive to everything. Very lively and jovial with the people who surround him on a daily basis, but also with strangers, as soon as he became familiar. For him, being hunted for truffles has almost become a kind of game. While doing his job he exhibits passion and efficiency. He feels expert in this type of research and loves to show off with his unsurpassed sense of smell. The hunting list has been gradually canceled, so as not to be distracted by the wild. Incredibly tied to his master; proves to be an excellent companion dog for his intelligence and obedience. It is an easily trainable breed.
