Breeds of dogs: Belgian Shepherd Tervueren

Origin, classification and history

Origin: Belgium.
F.C.I classification: Group 1 - shepherd dogs and cattle dogs (excluding Swiss cattle dogs).

The Belgian Shepherd Dog Tervueren (Tervueren - Tervurense) takes its name from the locality of Tervueren, located on the outskirts of Brussels. The first Tervueren dates back to the first half of the nineteenth century. There are currently four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd, but at the beginning of its history they were considered five. The Tervueren has gradually gone up numerically and its diffusion has gone up. It is also well bred in Italy, thanks to breeders like Giuseppe Violi. Today it is among the twelve expanding breeds in the world, attracting more and more attention from enthusiasts.

General aspect

Medium-sized medium-sized dog.
It is harmoniously proportionate. Rustic, intelligent breed, accustomed to outdoor life, built to withstand seasonal weather and the so frequent atmospheric variations of the Belgian climate.
The breed must give an impression of elegant robustness.
The breed includes four varieties of dogs, with the same structural and character characteristics, but which differ in the color of the coat and in the quality of the coat. Important measurements: body length, from the tip of the shoulder to the tip of the buttock, of 62 cm; back length, from the withers to the crest of the pelvis, of 41 cm; chest circumference behind the elbows, minimum 75 cm; chest height 31 cm; distance from the ground to the lowest point of the chest 31 cm; head length 25 cm; muzzle length from 12.5 to 13 cm.

Character

The four varieties have identical behavioral characteristics. A dog very dedicated and fond of the family and his owner, he has an innate aptitude for the role of guardian of the flock and of the property. He is vigilant and attentive; his lively and questioning gaze denotes his intelligence. If necessary, he is, without hesitation, an excellent self-defense dog, who manages to bring out his indomitable courage and extraordinary agility. Tireless and affectionate playmate towards children.
