Origin, classification and history
F.C.I classification: Group 5 - spitz and primitive type dogs.
Unfortunately there is no certain information on the true origins of the Podenco Portugues (Podengo Portuguese - Podengo Portugues Pequeno). We know for sure that it is an ancient race. It is assumed that it has Egyptian origins, like those of the other "Podenchi". Outside of his country, he has never been well known. Also in Portugal the number of specimens is constantly decreasing. Unfortunately, it is considered an endangered breed.
Sublongiline hunting dog, well proportioned and well muscled. It is present in two hair varieties, both divided according to the three sizes provided, which distinguish the large, medium and small Podenco. Like all primitive dogs, it is a rustic and very robust dog.
It is a dog that can be kept very well both at home and in the garden. Very reserved dog, who becomes attached to the owner but is almost always very shy with strangers. The Portuguese Podenco is a true primitive dog that is best expressed only in hunting. It is used in rabbit hunting or even as a guard dog. The large Podenco for big game and the small Podenco for rabbit and hunting in the den and in the crevices of the rocks. It is important that this dog has the opportunity to do a lot of motion.
