Origin, classification and history

Origin: Greece.
F.C.I classification: Group 6 - hounds and dogs by blood trail.

The origins of the Hellenic Hound (Hellinikos Ichnilatis) are not well known.

General aspect

Medium sized dog, sparse haired, black and tan, strong, vigorous, lively and sagacious.


Very fine and highly resistant scent hound, active in hunting alone or in groups; it responds completely on all flat or mountain terrain and also on the most rocky and impassable terrain. His voice is sonorous and harmonious. It does not require special care or precautions.

- males: from 47 to 55 centimeters;
- female: from 45 to 53 cm.
More or less tolerances: 2 centimeters.

Weight: from 17 to 20 kg.

Trunk: well proportioned and with excellent muscle mass. Typical hound appearance.
Head and muzzle: long head, the total length reaches 4, 35/10 of the height at the withers. The width between the cheekbones must not exceed half the total length of the head, that is, the cephalic index must be below the number 50. The upper longitudinal lines of the skull and nasal bridge are divergent. Cranial region of length equal to or slightly less than that of the nasal bridge; slightly flat in shape. Occipital apophysis not very evident. Very broad forehead, little marked metopic suture. Elevated superciliary arches. Lips quite developed.
Truffle: black in color.
Teeth: strong jaws with perfectly matching dental arches in the shape of scissors or scissors; strong, white teeth.
Neck: powerful, muscular, without baleen, it descends harmoniously towards the shoulders. Its length is approximately 6, 50/10 of the total length of the head.
Eyes: normal size, not sunken or prominent, with brown iris, lively and intelligent expression.
Ears: of medium length (about half the length of the head), attached high, that is above the zygomatic arch, flat, rounded at the lower end, falling vertically.
Arts: straight and perfectly perpendicular. Strong and evident muscle masses, especially in the hind limbs.
Tail: straight, brought under the level of the back line.
Hair: short hair, thick, a little hard, well united and adherent to the body.
Allowed colors: black and tan. A small white spot on the chest is tolerated. Visible mucous membranes, truffle and nails are black.
Most common defects: short and wide nasal bridge, ears too long or too short, neck too short, neck frail or too large, presence of baleen, convex or concave upper line, very downward or very upward lower line, flat lumbar region, short rump, hocks tonneau or vaccines, metacarpals and metatarsals too short or too long, hare foot, long tail, heavy tail, curled tail, monorchidism, cryptorchidism.
