Origin, classification and history

Origin: Italy.
F.C.I classification: Group 6 - hounds and dogs by blood trail.

The Maremmano Hound is a breed originating in the Maremma, probably selected from the end of the 1800s, not so much on the basis of its morphological characteristics, but rather on their skill, especially in barking while standing still. Very suitable for hunting wild boar, they do not give up either in the presence of large groups or particularly aggressive boars. It also fits well in hunting hare and other mammals. The breed was recently recognized by ENCI and is fairly common. Smaller than the Italian Hound, from which it also differs in the head, much less noble in color, which can be fawn, black and tan but also brindle, and also in the tail which is often cut.
