The Posavatz Hound (Posavski gonic) is thought to be an autochthonous breed, but we do not know anything concrete about the real origins. The breed was registered in 1955 under the name "Hound of the Kras Basin". In the current standard the name has been changed to "Save Valley Hound" or "Posavatz Hound".
Medium-sized, robust, medium-sized dog. Dry dog both in the muscles and in the structure in general. Light bone structure.
This hound is an agile and resistant hare and roe deer hunter. Of medium lively temperament, large barker. He is a gritty and obstinate dog at work. Easy to command and easy to train. In the family he is lively, cheerful, funny and playful. Also suitable for being with children. Dog that does not require special care and attention.

- ideal males 50 cm at the withers.
- ideal females 48 cm at the withers.
Trunk: medium-sized, of good proportions.
Head and muzzle: typical braccoid head, with the correct skull-muzzle ratio.
Truffle: the truffle is always black in color and with open nostrils.
Teeth: the teeth are complete and with scissor articulation.
Neck: well erect, quite long and strong.
Ears: hanging and applied against the cheeks, they are flat, fine, with rounded tips.
Eyes: they are large, with dark-colored iris and clear eyes.
Limbs: limbs perfectly perpendicular, straight and robust.
Shoulder: well angled.
Pace: speedy and with excellent thrust.
Musculature: dry, sculpted, very evident.
Tail: prolongs the line of the back. It is strong at the root, of medium length that at most reaches the hock. It is carried like a saber and covered with soft hair. Longer fur on the lower face (brush tail) is accepted.
Skin: elastic and fairly soft.
Hair: 2-3 cm long, dense and flat, abundant also on the belly. In the lower part of the belly, on the posterior edges of the limbs and on the lower side of the tail it is slightly longer.
Allowed colors: reddish formentino in all its nuances. It must never be brown or chocolate. There may be white spots on the head in the form of a star, lists on the head or larger white spots. Usually the latter form a collar on the neck or on its lower edge and extend on the chest, under the belly, on the lower part of the limbs and on the tip of the tail.
Most common defects: monorchidism, cryptorchidism, lack of premolars, defects in teeth, incorrect gait, coat colors not allowed by the standard, defective rear end, badly worn ears, depigmented truffle, poorly angled shoulder, limbs not perpendicular, short tail, cake tail, tail carried bad, insufficient musculature, obesity, aggressive or shy character, saddled back line, clear eye.
