Goat breeds: Capra Del Guadarrama

Goat breeds: Capra Del Guadarrama

Origin and diffusion

Origin: Spain.

The name of the breed derives from the Comarca of Guadarrama, a geographical area located in the Community of Madrid and Castilla y León, where the main nucleus of the animals of this racial entity is bred.
Traditionally a variety of Pyrenean goat has been considered, so Capra aegagrus is considered its ancestral representative.
Generally these animals are raised in the rugged mountainous areas of the Central System, in the north-western part of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, up to the mountainous areas of Segovia and Ávila.

Morphological and productive characteristics

The breed groups animals with high sexual dimorphism, with straight, volumetric and mesomorphic or sublongilinear profile. The presence of tettole is frequent. Long and flattened trunk in females; deeper and more compact in males. Large breast, with well differentiated nipples. The coat is of a varied color, although dark tones predominate (black, brown, brown, olive, etc.), with degradations in some areas of the body, of a different color depending on the variety.

Medium weight:
- Male: 72 kg
- Female: 54 kg

Raised mainly for meat but also milk. The production of meat is basically based on the commercial type of slaughterhouse: dairy goat, consisting of animals weighing between 8 and 10 kg fed with breast milk and slaughtered at 30-35 days of age.
